Reginald Nel is currently the dean at the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University for a second term and Professor in the Department of Practical Theology and Missiology, with a special interest in the interplay between Missiology (Mission Studies), Postcolonial theories, Missional Ecclesiology and Youth/Student Movements. This faculty has over the last five years transformed into one of the most diverse faculties of at the university, secured its sustainability basis in a tough economic climate (including the global pandemic) and has consolidating its position, rated as the top faculty on the continent, Africa, in the QS World University Rankings.

He also ministers at the Vlottenburg congregation, in Stellenbosch of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) and served on its various Executive leadership structures for many years.

Previously, Reginald Nel served between 2016 and 2022 on the Executive Committee of the International Association for Mission Studies (IAMS) and before that for two terms on the Executive Committee of the International Association for the study of Youth Ministry, between 2009 and 2013.

He was formerly the Editor of Missionalia: The Southern African Journal of Missiology, issued by the Southern African Missiological Society between 2012 to 2018, rated amongst the top academic journals in Mission Studies, Missiology and Intercultural Theology, globally.

Reginald Nel completed his doctorate in 2013, under the supervision of Prof JNJ Kritzinger with the title, “Discerning an African Missional Ecclesiology in dialogue with two uniting youth movements” and taught for a number of years at Unisa, leading the Missiology discipline group, before taking up the post as dean at Stellenbosch University. Some of his most recent chapters are entitled “'Keep Yourself Busy' Young People, Faith-Based Organisations and Social Cohesion in Riverlea" in the book “Stuck in the Margins? Young people and faith-based organisations in South Africa and Nordic localities” (2022) and “Overcoming walls: A Southern African Theological Reflection on Youth Ministry in Stellenbosch, 1980-2000" in the book “Faith, Race and Inequality amongst Young Adults in South Africa" (2022), yet, writing in his mother tongue, Afrikaans, for a broader audience, for many years, he was also a regular columnist in one of South Africa’s most prominent Afrikaans speaking daily newspapers, commenting on public life, youth culture and faith.
