Lecture by John Witte Jr.
On December 9th at 7:30 PM, ZERG‒Zentrum für Religion und Gesellschaft will host a lecture at Adenauerallee 131 featuring one of the foremost scholars in the field of law and religion, John Witte Jr.. Professor Witte holds esteemed positions as the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Law, McDonald Distinguished Professor of Religion, and Faculty Director of the Center for the Study of Law a±nd Religion at Emory University. He is also an authority on legal history, human rights, religious freedom, and family law.
In his lecture, entitled “Law, Christianity and the Enlightenment Revolution of the Western Legal Tradition,” Witte will talk about how the European and American Enlightenment movements from 1688 to 1815 brought transformative changes to Western law.

Events with Niels Valdemar Vinding
In collaboration with ZERG, the Seminar of Canon Law will host a workshop on natural law in Bonn on December 10th. The following day, a joint event will be held in Leuven, Belgium, co-organized with the KU Leuven’s Theo Team “Power, Authority, Governmentality: Transformations of Leadership in Religious Communities.” The latter event also offers an option for virtual participation.
The guest speaker for these events is Niels Valdemar Vinding. Vinding holds degrees in Theology (BA), Islamic Studies (MA, PhD) and an LLM in Canon Law from Cardiff University. He is Principal Investigator of an excellence research project on 'Producing Sharia in Context' (2021-2025), which demonstrates how sharia, framed as Islamic law, ethics and practice and observed amongst Muslims in Denmark and Europe, is substantially to be understood as a product of its context. Vinding has published widely on Islam, Church and State in Denmark, including 'Annotated Legal Documents on Islam in Denmark' from 2020. He is contributor to the CUREDI project at MPI in Halle, the Atlas project, and is member of European Consortium for Church and State Research.
