Tagzeitenliturgie gehört zu den gottesdienstlichen Erbschaften, die die Wittenberger Reformation sowohl übernahm als auch veränderte. Ihr galten Martin Luthers erste liturgiereformerische Anregungen. Denn in der Kirche solle „der ganze Psalter im Gebrauch bleiben“ (totum psalterium in usu maneat). Dieses Programm wurde tatsächlich in vielfältiger Weise quer durch die Städte und Territorien umgesetzt, die sich der Wittenberger Reformation anschlossen. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass das frühe lutherische Stundengebet bis vor Kurzem in der Forschung kaum Aufmerksamkeit gefunden hat. Das Berlin-Bonner Projekt will dem abhelfen. Es kann das naturgemäß nur exemplarisch tun. Mit den beiden Beispielen, denen das Projekt gilt, werden zwei unterschiedliche Typen nach-reformatorischer Tagzeitenliturgien untersucht, in denen auch unterschiedliche vorreformatorische Traditionen fortgeführt werden: am Berliner Dom als Stift und an den Leipziger Kirchen Thomaskirche und Nikolaikirche als Pfarrkirchen. Das Symposion soll diese beiden Beispiele vorstellen, sie in ihren historischen Kontext einzeichnen und fragen, welche typischen Züge der Entwicklung frühreformatorischer Tagzeitenliturgie in Kontinuität und Neuansatz gegenüber dem mittelalterlichen Erbe sich an ihnen ablesen lässt.

The Liturgy of the Hours is one of the liturgical legacies which the Wittenberg Reformation both retained and modified. Indeed, Martin Luther’s first suggestions of liturgical reform referred to the Hours, since he thought that “the whole Psalter should remain in use” (totum psalterium in usu maneat) in the church. His program for the Divine Office was subsequently implemented in many ways throughout the cities and territories which adopted the Wittenberg Reformation. It is all the more astonishing, then, that until recently there has been so very little scholarly interest in the early Lutheran Liturgy of the Hours. The Berlin-Bonn project addresses this oversight. Naturally, however, it can do so only by focusing on representative examples. Those chosen in the context of the project stand for two types of post-Reformation liturgies: the Hours at the Berlin Cathedral which represent monastic practice and those at the Leipzig churches Thomaskirche and Nikolaikirche which represent the practice of parish churches. The symposium will present these two examples, place them in their historical context, and ask which typical features of the development of the early Reformation liturgy of the Hours remained in continuity with the medieval past and which broke free from that heritage.
